Big Picture on How to Get Florida Drivers License (Read This First)
Florida allows non‑citizens, including Canadians, to obtain a driver’s license if you can prove three things:
- Lawful presence in the United States
- A Florida residential address
- Your identity
- Proof of Social Security Ineligibility

As a Canadian, you typically enter the U.S. under B‑1/B‑2 visitor status. This is acceptable for a Florida license.

I have an Airbnb business and in Miami, hold long term leases under my corporation name. However, when I first launched my first property in Miami I urgently needed my American drivers license before heading down to South America and still did not have enough time under y belt to have 1 month of bank statements or my first utility bill sent out under my name. Step 3: Get your Proof of social security ineligibility
This step is for Canadians who do not plan to be legal residents of the United States or who do not plan to work legally in the United States. (If your a business owner with American clients you can still work in the united states under your entity even if you do not have an American company.)
The DMV will ask you for a social security number and your Canadian social security number will not be a valid one. In this instance you will have to provide documentation to the DMV that you are ineligible as a Canadian to have a social security number while living in the United States.
I went here to get these documents in total it took about 45 minutes of my time + a 30 minute drive.

However during my time at the DMV there was a Quebecois girl who was trying to obtain her drivers license and she was obligated to take a written test. However, she did not have her physical Canadian drivers license on her which is why I am assuming she had to take one where I was not required. You will have to do a vision test.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind when you apply for your Florida drivers license they will take your current Canadian drivers license! Luckily I had two additional expired Canadian drivers license’s and just handed them one of those with no issue. I went to the Miami DMV here in Bayside below. For some reason its google my business is labelled Tax collector office but it’s a DMV in Miami.
They don’t allow walk-ins sometimes depending on how busy it is. When I arrived I had to scan a SQ code and had to book online before getting inside to wait for like 55 minutes before I was attended to.
