Reasons that led me to Become an Entrepreneur
When I was a little kid I remember asking my dad what my last name meant. When he told me it meant “Freedom” I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was really young when I found out and really didn’t understand the full meaning and power of what Freedom stood for but I was happy it meant something, especially something that the other kids in my school would understand as this was a word in American elementary school they would be pounding down our throats.
Later on in life I found out my name from french actually translates from Liberty & Freedom. Since childhood and even today I feel pride translating my name to my anglophone and hispanophone friends. My francophone acquaintances always compliment me about my name.
My name really has hugely impacted my trajectory in life and how I see the world and live by it. Achieving freedom has always been a goal in my life and it’s how I optimize many of my decisions. I’ve heard quotes from some philosophers that you cant have freedom without sacrificing security. I am not sure if I buy into that, (at least not yet in my young life), as I am not making maximum risk decisions either, only calculated risks.
If anything I find myself living a life more secure than others with world health insurance, global banking, and being incognito in nations with my many residencies, passports and ID’s. What a life of true freedom can cause is some instability when it comes to love. As it’s not a simple task in 2025 to develop something foundational with someone when you are many places at once, ironically usually the girls that want to be lavishly spent on a world tour travel are not the good girls I want, and the good girls I want usually never want to leave being close to their families.
Anyways…back to the impacts of how I became a global entrepreneur.
I believe there are 4 Freedoms one must achieve for one to actually be able to say they are a free man or women. One of these freedoms being financial freedom. Which is how entrepreneurship has become such a big aspect in my life.
Reason 1 To Become an Entrepreneur
Reason one why I became a entrepreneur starts with a little story when I was 5 years old. My fathers job GTE (which later became Verizon) had a take your child to work day. I remember how excited I was would be hanging out with my dad, but even happier I wouldn’t have to go school.
It was around this time I found out that I found out that adults didn’t pay their jobs to go to work. I had thought going to work was like a cool exclusive country club adults went to. It started to make a lot sense when my Dad told me they that they paid him to come to work and it felt comforting knowing that if that wasn’t the case he would’nt be going to work but staying to hang out with me my mother and brother.
I remember holding my fathers hand as we walked towards the big metallic GTE building. My Dads cool big work beeper clipped to the side of his belt would be hitting my head. As we walked in to the main floor there was a bright natural light coming in there was music, food being given away, balloons, event tables, their was even a turtle mascot!
As we stuffed our faces they then invited us to a small presentation for all the kids and parents. They showed us how computers gather information and gifted us this suduko like number chart that would allow us to figure out any number someone was thinking in their heads. It was freakin awesome. As the morning died down it was time to see my dad in action.
Finally see this so called “work” he always talked about at home. Things started to get more serious as we rode the elevators to my fathers work floor. When we finally arrived and the doors opened….silence…. much to my surprise from the ambiance that was prepared for us on the first floor. No music, the only thing I could here were people typing like machines on their keyboards and he occasional cough. Even the sunshine from downstairs seemed to have been sucked out of this floor and replaced with a strange pattern beige that may have well as been grey.
As I followed my dad to his office we passed all these grim faces in their cubicles as if these people had just been sentenced to life. I remained optimistic to see my dads office.
When I arrived to my dads office I can say things did not look any better. The other cubicles at least tried to do some decor and the majority I passed were private single cubicles. My fathers however… had one computer with one phone and it was a shared cubicle with an overweight white dude working away who didn’t even have the decency to say hello to his work colleagues child. It was at this moment where the magic died. At that young age and in that instant I remember thinking to myself I could never do this. I felt claustrophobic and I felt like I needed to be outside in nature.
Reason 2 To Become an Entrepreneur
The second reason why I decided to work for myself at the age of 9 is another small story associated with my father. While driving home with my family I remember asking my dad who his boss was. He responded with his supervisor. I followed up with who his boss was, he responded with the manager.
Again, I asked who his boss was, he responded with the senior manager. This went on to executive, vp, president, until we finally reached the last boss, the CEO. Here my father spewed some jaw dropping information that seemed like a fairytale in real life. When I asked my dad who the boss of the CEO was there was a brief silence… my dad said “no one!” I stated this person must be the one who works the hardest… My dad laughed and said “the CEO works the least out of everyone, they usually do public speaking and organize everyone”. He mentioned some CEOs don’t even work.
I was so confused.. “But they get paid” I asked… “they still get paid without going to work and they get paid the most” my dad told me. “Some of them still get paid even if they get fired” I asked why this was and he mentioned “a lot of the time these guys founded the company they created it, so they have shares or negotiated bonuses or parachutes if they leave the company for whatever the reason.
As I sat in the back of the car rounding the bumpy Sierra Pines road as we approached our home I though to myself in awe how such a position exists. It seemed common sense to be that you have to be the CEO and just create the company. I said to my dad “I want to be CEO!” as he laughed while we arrived home.
Reason 3 To Become an Entrepreneur
My last reason comes from the efforts of entrepreneurship from parents I saw growing up. It is always funny recounting all the stories as a family of my parents entrepreneurial efforts. Although my parents never had any real big success their efforts had a lasting impact on me as a child. The first endeavour I can remember from my parents were selling these dolls. Our garage was stuffed with these big wooden boxed crates full of dolls. My parents would sell these at flea markets and my brother and I would always accompany them.
My father then got into some MLM scheme of travelling. We would host these extravagant parties to sell these travel things, there was this charismatic guy who would do the talking and I remember as a kid not having a good vibe from him whatever the reason. My father then joined Vitamark another health MLM pyramid. He even decaled his car to one of the energy drinks. It was this crazy neon black and green decal with the “Crave” energy drink.
I had the option in middle school to get dropped off & picked up in either the “crave” car or the scion xb toaster car… My mother would sell salad master and Avon to all our family and friends. My father lost 10K in investing in pinacle from a friends recommendation. Although it seemed like everything my parents touched failed, their efforts to keep trying something new was imprinted in me.
